| A younger Drake, when he played in Degrassi |
Is Drake a Poser? I find that when people reject someone or something they get stuck on one thing to prove their point. For example there are those people who dismiss Drake as a rapper solely because they perceive him as a "poser" since he didn't come from the stereotypical conditions that most rappers have come from. Next month I'll be going to see him in concert and can't wait. Whenever I tell someone, there is always that hater that scoffs at my excitement, saying Drake is such a poser or a bad rapper. Now I completely believe that musical taste is a matter of taste and preference. So yes to some he might be a bad rapper. But is it fair to say he is a poser and how?
A poser is someone who acts like something that they’re not. Drake does not market himself as a "gangsta rapper". Because he simply isn't. I haven't seen him in any music videos throwing gang signs and rappin' about ak-47s. He didn't come from the streets and doesn't act like it either. In fact he was discovered by Lil Wayne based solely on his talent and not where he came from. Just because he was on Degrassi when he was younger doesn't mean he can't express himself through rap, with content relevant to his age and himself such as sex, coming to terms with fame, women, love, etc.
In conclusion Drake is not a poser. So those people that don’t respect Drake as an artist because he came into the rap game in an unorthodox way, can quit making the same irrelevant remarks. Case Closed. Please comment if you can refute that.

ReplyDeleteTo reply to you inquiry as to why Aubrey would be considered you must reevaluate you paradigm relating to what is considered a "gangster". You see the whole gangster rap is a derivative of what is the true basis of hip-hop. Any poet who picks up the mic has to have a perspective that relates to his world. The problem is that as hip hop becomes more popular this perspective gets substituted by what is hot. So in essence you no longer have the creative spirite that is the roots of all hip hop and instead you have people who want to rap to be popular. Now to address Aubrey who is an industry creation. If you listen to his introduction on the mix tape scene you can see just by that move and his topics of discussion that he is following an industry formula...that is what the labels have determined to be the best way to intoduce and give him credibility. This already goes against hip hops irganic nature in that none of the classics of hip hop where given a formula to follow. They all pioneered what is hip hop. Whether you talk about. Rakim, outkast, dr. Dre, hell even lil wayne was more organic. Now you have Aubrey, a canadian suburban transplant who hits the scene sounding like he fresh of the mean streets of Anyhood USA. Saying things like "my homie showed me how to spot undercovers" and " Im hustling both legal and illegally". Sounds good but its not real...ie he is posing. Another example is how he raps tough when he scameos with certian artist (french montana comes to mind) but his typical m.o. is the sappy I wear my heart on my sleeve type dude. Complete oxymoron but to the average person who just heara his voice his lyrics escape you. I could go one but at the end of the dayDrake is a poser and from the perspective of the streets he is a mark, sucka and a punk. Any body who sends his bodyguard to intimidate someone you dont know who was critcal of you rightfully earns all of those titles and more. To sum it up for you, yes Drake is a poser. Sorry.
